Dr. Bob Perkins is a well-known TMJ specialist that is also experienced at helping patients who need orthodontic care. Dr. Perkins always starts with the big picture to ensure an accurate diagnosis and then effectively treats patients in the most caring and efficient way possible. Dr. Perkins focus is to enhance smiles using his significant experience and knowledge in cosmetic dentistry and teeth-straightening options.

We treat the following conditions:

  • TMJ/TMD issues
  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic breathing through the mouth
  • Airway obstruction
  • Upper and lower jaw positioning
  • Proper alignment of teeth and jaw
  • Straightening teeth

We see the “straightening of the teeth” in a similar light as putting the final changes on a house. The foundation, framing, wiring, and plumbing all need to be done correctly for the house to be a success. There are 3 potential phases that any given patient can undergo:

  • Braces for minor expansion and straightening
  • Placing expansion appliances initially, and then clear braces to complete the case
  • Expansion, teeth straightening, upper and/or lower jaw advancement

Gummy Smile Treatment

A “gummy” smile is a condition when an inordinate amount of gum tissue shows above the teeth when smiling. Typically, this is not considered a favorable situation. There have been a limited number of solutions to this problem; both are surgical. One of the options involves removing a section of the upper jaw (maxilla) and then screwing the two sections back together. The other involves having a specialist remove bone and gum tissue surgically to allow more of each tooth to be exposed (and less gum).

Our office offers a non-invasive way to get rid of a “gummy smile.” Orthodontically, we can intrude the teeth (raise them up in the jaw) to treat this condition. This is non-surgical and painless. The intrusion happens gradually over a few months and in all but the most severe cases, a gummy smile can be eliminated. We can often remove a significant amount of gum tissue to alleviate a “gummy” smile using a laser. To perform this treatment, the gum tissue must be examined to ensure there is excess gum tissue covering the tooth.
