Sleep Apnea Treatment
At Bob Perkins, DDS, we are TMJ and orthodontic specialists who can treat the issues that accompany poorly aligned teeth, bite imbalance and jaw joint disorders. One of the common issues that can occur when the teeth or jaw are out of alignment is airway obstruction or sleep apnea. This condition can stop breathing during sleep, putting you at a higher risk for stroke, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. It can also cause fatigue, headaches and loss of concentration. Our innovative treatments can help remedy sleep apnea and give relief for our patients in New York City and Manhattan.
Obstructive sleep apnea and TMJ often go hand in hand. When the temporomandibular joint is damaged or no longer working correctly, the lower jaw can shift backwards when sleeping. This puts the tongue further back in the mouth, adding pressure to the soft palate and tissues in the mouth that can cause airway obstruction. This can also occur with orthodontic issues caused by mouth breathing. To treat this condition, the jaw and teeth need to be put back into alignment to readjust the position of the tongue, opening the airway while sleeping.
Orthodontics, TMJ and Sleep Apnea
When your teeth, arches or jaw are out of alignment, it can cause many issues. One of these is sleep apnea. We approach oral care from an overall health perspective. Correcting underlying orthodontic or neuromuscular problems can improve the function of your jaw and teeth. This can relieve many symptoms of TMJ and orthodontic problems, including sleep apnea. Unlike other dentists that may use a mouthguard or another temporary appliance to treat sleep apnea, we treat the cause of the misalignment. This offers permanent relief and protection from health risks for many people with sleep apnea.
For those that live in Manhattan, we have a convenient location in NYC for treatment of sleep apnea, TMJ and orthodontic issues. Contact our team today to schedule your consultation to get advanced care for your sleep apnea.

He is the best dentist I have ever been to and I don’t see myself ever changing unless I move out of state. He is worth the drive from anywhere and it gives you a great reason to take a vacation day and to go to the beach as well.
I broke my tooth during the holidays and Dr Perkins saw me immediately even though he was supposed to leave for the holidays. And the staff are as charming and caring as he is. I walked out of there within an hour with my temporary tooth in place and not one ounce of pain. He’s the best !
Always a pleasure to see the dentist knowing my smile is improving! Bob is caring and I tell all my good friends about him & people who appreciate beauty and attention to detail.
